Do you think shopping is popular in the USA? Why? Why not? What merchandise do people prefer? Why do you think people purchase in the expensive stores? The aim of this survey is to analyze the results of recent interviewing teenagers about their habits of spending their free time. The students of Snowden High School were asked where, how and with whom they prefer to spend their free time, what they do for fun, what extra curricular activities they take and what role in their life Mass Media and sports play. As a rule American families do not have any special family traditions. This is explained by the fact that the majority of the interviewed students say that the traditions in their families are the same as in any other family all over America. But they could not explain what typical American traditions they meant. Only 30% of students interviewed say that they have some customs within their families. On the whole these traditions are connected with celebrating holidays and weekends in some special way. Generally speaking American teenagers do not like just to have a rest from everyday activities on weekends. The fact is that only 15% of students like to stay alone, sleep, cook, watch TV or just relax on weekends. A large number of students usually travel with their families around the country, visit their relatives or just have a good time together with their families during weekends. Doing shopping, going to the parties, clubs, movies and concerts are still the most popular items of spending weekends for teenagers. 55% of the teenagers interviewed go to shopping, to the parties, movies and clubs regularly. Students always spend their holidays and weekends with their families and friends. The largest number of them like to hang out with friends on weekends. However, they prefer to spend their holidays with their relatives-people who really love and understand them. This implies that most of the holidays in the USA are still family holidays, when all the relatives gather together. Nearly 60% of students go out when they have some free time. This indicates that teenagers in America prefer to be out of home with their friends when they have free time. A small number of students mentioned that if they had a choice they would spend more time with their families, but it is not possible, since all the members of their family have a lot of things to do out of home. Different extra-curricular activities are very popular in the USA as well. The majority of the students interviewed do some extra-curricular activities. Most of them go in for sports. Such games as basketball, baseball, football and soccer are among the most popular ones. For most of the students sports are very important, they help keep fit. Some students even claim that sports are their life. A small number of students say that they like only to watch sports, so they are unimportant for them, but many still love sports. Teenagers in the USA prefer active way of life. Mass Media take a great part in the life of Americans and in the life of teenagers as well. 75% of the students say that Media play a great role in their life, while only 25% say that Media are unimportant for them. Most of students like Media since Media keep updating to current events and help to know what is going on in the world. The majority of teenagers prefer TV and radio. In some families TV-sets are turned on all the time. Newspapers, magazines and the Internet are not very popular among the teenagers. In conclusion, teenagers in America prefer to spend their free time and weekends with their friends out of home, while on the holidays they like to be with their relatives. American teenagers prefer active way of life and sports are very important for them. However, Mass Media play not a small role in their life. TOP
